Graphic Design 101, a two-day, evening course for aspiring creatives, offers a foundational understanding of visual communication and design theory. Students will explore branding, file types, color, composition, type, and an Adobe software overview, all through lectures and included textbook materials. This course requires no prior software knowledge, providing a comprehensive introduction. The course concludes with a one-on-one office hour credit.

Outline

• Understanding Branding - history, psychology behind, case studies, dos/don'ts

• Looking At Identity - brand marks, iconography, semiotics, visual communication

• Point or Pixel - knowing the difference: vector and raster

• Graphic File Types - extensions, technical functions

• Applying Color Modes - color space, color theory, appropriate applications

• Resolution + Quality - image quality, file limitations, sourcing stock assets

• Composition & Layout - information hierarchy, arrangement and organization, proven principles

• What the Font - type foundry, mood/tone/message, licensing

• Overview of Adobe - software demonstration of design workflow in Bridge, Lightroom, Illustrator, Photoshop to file export/package.

• Q & A - 1-on-1 Office Hour credit to use within three months of your class.
